Places of interest in Portugal - Tomar
Tomar is known as the city of the Templars; there are other testimonies of their influence in Tomar, mainly in the Mata dos Sete Montes forest, and in the church of Santa Maria do Olival, which the Knights Templar founded in the 12th century and which contains the tombs of several Grand Masters of the Order. Don't forget to visit the Convent of Christ.
In 1983, UNESCO declared the Templar Castle and Monastery of the Christ Knights of Tomar a "World Heritage of Humanity"; it is invaluable to the history of the West. Built on a site of Roman worship, the whole thing tells the story of seven centuries of Portuguese history and the great moments of the history of the West.
